International Day of Persons with Disabilities
For the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (3rd of December) I decided to make a cross stitch pattern that is close to my heart - TS (Tourettes Syndrome).
I have TS and have struggled with inclusion especially at school. TS stops me from doing many things such as my job when I have a severe tic attack - sometimes to the point where I cannot speak as the vocal tics just keep coming and coming. Simple tasks such as driving have become inaccessible to me as I cannot control my TS and my tics include stomping and closing my eyes. For some people these tics stop whilst they are concentrating on driving but for me they do not so therefore I am not allowed to drive. The most disabling part of TS is definitely peoples attitudes some people seem to believe, because I can sometimes suppress my tics, that I have complete control over them when in fact I have little to no control over them. Another thing people say is I can't possibly have Tourettes because I am either not a child or not swearing which obviously is untrue.
Hopefully this cross stitch pattern will raise a bit of awareness for TS. If you do happen to make it ensure you share any photos of your works with me! It is available on Craftsy for a small charge and all the money goes to Tourettes Action.
